Midwest Second Hand Style!

Hair Brushes!

Hair Brushes come in all types and sizes. The key is to remember the smaller the brush, the more curl. A larger brush gives you less curl and lot’s of volume.

Hair Safety Tip! Make sure hair is 80% dry before you use a brush. This will avoid breakage. There is a specific technique for blow drying hair from wet to dry with a brush. You should leave that to your hairdresser!

Metal Or Ceramic Round Brushes!

Metal or Ceramic Brushes are designed to hold heat. They work great for light duty smoothing or soft wavy sets. Always unwind hair from the brush exactly how you wound it up. That stops a metal brush from getting caught in your hair.

Boar Bristle Round Brushes!

Natural Boar Bristle Brushes are designed to smooth fuzzy, curly hair. The natural fibers of the boar hair wrap around your hair when heat is applied. My personal favorite is a Comarie metal base bristle brush from Sallies. They last forever!

Make sure you apply good tension with a bristle brush. Make sure you are blow drying scalp to ends for the full smooth effect.

Don’t Be Alarmed. Sometimes Boar Bristles smell like they are burning. Use a heat protector on your hair and everything will be fine.

Boar Bristle Styling Brushes!

Styling brushes work great for grandma sets and smoothing out backcombing. Teasing the crown is very trendy. Think of a tamed down version of the sixties.

Gently smooth over the top layer of backcombing with your styling brush. The natural fibers work way better than a plastic comb.

Plastic Vent Brushes!

Vent Brushes are designed for volume, pure and simple. I never use these brushes because I am a modern hairdresser. Only older, permed styles require a vent brush.

A more modern choice would be a Paddle Brush or a Denman Styling Brush.

Paddle Brushes!

Paddle Brushes are great for smooth styles on less curly hair textures.

Paddle Brushes work wonders on fuzzy bangs. Apply product to your bangs, I recommend Redken Align 15 and Redken Glass 01. Blow dryer in one hand, brush in other, brush your bangs to one side. Then brush them to the other side. Then brush them down. Repeat quickly and get all of the moisture out of your hair. Your bangs will be shiny, smooth, and fuzz free!
