Midwest Second Hand Style!

Washing!

Shampoo contains surfactants, little molecules that attach to the surface oils and dirt and pull them away with water. Inexpensive and harsh shampoos not only pull off dirt, they pull off your color!

Wash your hair every other day. In some hair textures, you can even go three days. This avoids color fade and split, dry ends.

Try to wash your scalp more than your hair. Use the pads of your fingertips and work the shampoo into your scalp. When your scalp has been thoroughly cleaned, slowly work the remaining suds into your ends. I suggest doing this while the shampoo is being rinsed out.

If your hair is really dirty, or you are going to do a deep conditioning treatment, shampoo with a deep cleanser like Redken Hair Cleansing Cream or Grund Rinse. Make sure to really clean the ends before a deep conditioner. Conditioners don’t have the same affect over 2 weeks of hairspray!

Flaky Scalp!

Scalp Health is important. If you have some minor flaking or itchiness, wash with a mentholated shampoo like Grund Revive-TH or Nioxin. These shampoos clean layers of dirt off your scalp and bring blood flow to the surface. If you don’t take care of your flaky scalp, your hair could start to thin or come out is small chunks! How scary is that?

What Shampoo Do I Use?

Color Treated Hair!

I recommend a light, color treatment shampoo. Most color fade comes from UV Rays, so make sure you buy one with SPF of UV Protection. Redken Color Extend Is Great and Works For Every Hair Texture.

Permed Hair

Permed hair lacks Protein. That’s why permed hair feels brittle and dry. Use a shampoo with less surfactants for more gentle cleansing. Redken Extreme Shampoo is light and full of hair healthy proteins for strength and shine.

Fine Hair

Fine Hair needs life and body. Look for shampoos that don’t contain oils or waxes that weigh hair down. My friend Jenny swears on Pureology and Redken Body Full for her fine hair.

Fine Hair looks better and has more volume on the 2nd and 3rd days. Unless you have a very oily skin, you should only wash fine hair 2 or 3 times a week.

Curly Hair

Do Not Shampoo Curly Hair Every Day. If you need to get it wet for styling, that is ok. Just rub a little conditioner in the ends.

Curly Hair Needs moisture. Many shampoos remove moisture from curly hair. I suggesting using a heavy, creamy, oily shampoo a few times a week. Redken Smooth Down, or Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo gives your hair back the moisture it needs.

Overly Blonde Hair

Overly Blonde Hair is Lacking Moisture and Protein. I suggest alternating between a moisturizing shampoo like Redken Clear Moisture, and a protein/color shampoo like Reken Color Extend.

Switch it Up. I suggesting having 2 or 3 shampoos in your shower. Changing up your shampoo avoids residue build up on your hair.
